Helicobacter pylori is a type of bacteria that infects the stomach.

What are the symptoms of this infection?

Most infected people show no symptoms and having an infection does not lead to any problems. However, in some cases, infected people may show some symptoms, most of which result from stomach ulcers. These symptoms include:
  • Upper abdominal pain
  • Early satiety
  • A burning sensation in the stomach, especially after eating
  • Nausea or vomiting

What are the available tests to detect this infection?

Available tests for people who develop symptoms:
  • Blood test (for patients testing for the first time
  • Stomach biopsy examination
  • Breath test
  • Stool test

How do you treat Helicobacter pylori?

Most patients require treatment using a combination of medications for 14 days. These medications include:
  • Two to three types of antibiotics
  • Medication to reduce stomach acids
Once the treatment is completed, patients undergo the test one more time to ensure that the bacteria has been eliminated. The test is carried out at least four weeks after completion of treatment.
