The body systems work as a complete integrated systems and each system functions so that we maintain the continuity of the activity and the vitality of the body in life. And in that matter any disturbance in any organ in the body will have a very significant negative effect on the function of that system and that will be reflected on the rest of the body as a whole and will show as a disease. Let us go in some minute details on the urology system.
The genital urinary system consists of the following:
Kidneys: There are 2 kidneys located in the abdominal cavity under the diaphragm directly and because of the liver on the right side the right kidney is slightly lower than the left kidney. Kidneys are dark, red in color and they are encapsulated in a thick transparent capsule and covered by a layer of fat. The shape of the kidney is bean-shaped and it is about 12 cm long, 6 cm wide and 3 cm thick. Each of the kidneys weighs around 150 grams. The kidney has three functions: absorption, filtration and excretion, and in each minute 600 ml of blood reaches each kidney by the way of renal artery and this is around 20% of the cardiac output. The kidney takes out the harmful metabolism by products from the blood excreted it into the kidney pelvis then to the bladder through the ureter and then outside the body.
Ureters: These are the 2 tubes; each one comes from each kidney and it function to transfer the urine to the bladder.
Bladder: Is a reservoir, functions to store the urine until it excreted outside the body. The urine contains water, urea, uric acid, ammonia, salts and other waste products.
The Causes of Urological Diseases :
Urological diseases are generally classified into 2 groups: organic and functional.
Functional diseases indicate that the organ in itself is healthy and anatomically but it does not function properly.
The organic diseases mean that there is some damage or swelling or tumor in one of the organs that makes it anatomically abnormal.
These two groups of diseases can happen to the kidneys, bladder and prostate, and may lead to various complaints like urine retention, urine incontinence, urinary frequency or even cancer.
Generally speaking, functional urological diseases are treated medically and it is only rarely that we consider surgery while on the other hand organic diseases are treated either medically or surgically. Diagnosing the urological diseases is the responsibility of the specialist who is called the Urologist. We will look into various complaints during investigations, find the diagnosis and prescribed an effective treatment.
The Clinic provides diagnostic & therapeutic management to patients of both sexes from birth through all ages. Care is given to in-patients and out-patients with genitor-urinary adrenal conditions, infertility cases, acute and chronic. Procedures done in the clinic include diagnostic radiological procedures such as intravenous Pyleogram and Cystogram, specialty diagnostic tests such as cystometrogram and PVRs, Flow rates, therapeutic procedures such as, urethral dilation, supra public catheter placement/ change, nephrostrogram, bladder irrigation's and instillation's, urodynamics, hormone injections ESWL (Extracorporeal Shock wave Lithotripsy).
The Common Urological Diseases
Renal failure: What is renal failure? This is the impairment of the kidneys from performing their normal function and this eventually leads to accumulation of waste products into the blood leading to renal failure. Many people think that renal failure is a hopeless and incurable disease. This is a big common mistake. Renal failure is two types: the acute renal failure and this is a completely reversible curable condition and chronic renal failure this is again could be mild, moderate or severe. The mild and moderate type is again amenable to treatment and cure by improving the kidney function. As for the severe renal failure the chronic type then usually the patient may need dialysis and may end up in renal transplant. And nowadays renal transplants are very successful and many people can live normal life after transplanting the kidney.
Infections: These are very common, more common in women than in men and they are usually treated easily with medication and complete cure is expected.
Stones: There are many causes for the formation of stones and one of the areas of the highest incidence of stone formation is the Middle East because of the weather, dry atmosphere and to the presence of a lot of crystals and minerals in the food. Some stones pass spontaneously and some of them need some medication and drinking a lot of fluid to facilitate their passage. Some of them may be large enough that may require lithotripsy, that is breaking it inside the body without surgery and occasionally they may require endoscopic or open surgery to break and removed. Some of the stones if left for a long time may grow and cause extensive destruction to the kidney and some of these patients may end up in renal failure.
Tumors: These are either kidney tumors which are very rare or bladder, bloody tumors which are more frequent and it usually happens in smokers. The third type is prostate tumor or cancer and again this is not frequent. Usually these tumors are treated by excision either by open surgery as in the kidney or by endoscopic surgery as in the bladder or prostate and all these operations are performed in Dallah Hospital.
Since the opening of Dallah Hospital, it had a complete and a very well equipped Urology Center with all the advanced medical equipment and instruments for treatment of various urological problems and a very advance lithotripsy center for the treatment of urological stones. The center is supervised by consultants of international reputation and very high experience in European hospitals and here in Saudi Arabia, and these specialists have also introduced the day surgery operations in addition to the major urological operations. The Urology Center is backed up by a very advanced laboratory for medical analysis and a very advanced radiological equipment to help in the proper and accurate diagnosis of the urological diseases.
